What Is a Birth Chart? A Beginner's Guide
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a diagram of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment and place you were born. Astrologers read it through planets, zodiac signs and houses. It is a symbolic tool rather than a scientific prediction, and many people use it as a prompt for reflecting on themselves.
What does a birth chart show?
A birth chart maps the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets at a particular moment, usually a birth. The 12 zodiac signs, each spanning 30 degrees, are laid over it. It is then divided into 12 sectors called houses, starting from the eastern horizon at that moment.
What are the main parts of a birth chart?
- Planets: in astrology these stand for different parts of life and personality. The Sun and Moon are counted among them.
- Signs: the 12 zodiac signs describe the style in which each planet’s themes show up.
- Houses: the 12 sectors stand for areas of life.
- Aspects: the angles between planets, which astrologers read as how those themes relate to each other.
What do you need to make a birth chart?
Your birth date, time and place. Time and place matter because the rising sign, or ascendant, which starts the houses, is specific to both. Without an exact time you can still see most planetary signs, but your rising sign and houses may be wrong.
How do you start reading yours?
- Find your Sun, Moon and rising signs.
- Look at one planet at a time: its sign, then its house.
- Treat each placement as a question: does this sound like me, and where doesn’t it?
- Keep what is useful and leave the rest.
Is a birth chart scientifically proven?
No. Scientific testing has found no evidence to support astrology’s premises or claimed effects. Many people still find it worthwhile as a way to reflect. In a Pew Research Center survey, 28% of US adults said they consult astrology or a horoscope at least once a year, and most people who use astrology, tarot or fortune tellers said they do it mostly for fun. A chart shouldn’t replace medical, legal, financial or mental health advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is a birth chart the same as a horoscope?
The terms overlap. A horoscope can mean the chart itself, though many people use the word for short daily readings by Sun sign.
What if I don't know my birth time?
You can still see most planetary signs, but your rising sign and houses may not be accurate, because they depend on the exact time and place.
Can my birth chart predict my future?
Scientific testing hasn't found evidence that it can. It's better used as a prompt for reflection than as a prediction.
